The Property Council of Australia has today welcomed the State Government’s move to establish a formal South East Queensland Housing Supply Expert Panel to monitor supply and demand for housing in the region.
The Government’s announcement follows calls by the Property Council and the Queensland Council of Social Services (QCOSS) earlier this year, for the establishment of an independent Housing Supply Council to collect, monitor and review data on housing.
“Through discussions with QCOSS, and our examination of the draft SEQ Regional Plan, it became apparent there is a lack of authoritative data available to the Government upon which to make decisions about the future of housing supply,” says Chris Mountford, Queensland Executive Director of the Property Council of Australia.
“To ensure there remains an adequate pipeline of affordable housing, there is a real need for independent monitoring of both supply and demand across all local government areas,” Mr Mountford says.
“We commend the Government for committing to the establishment of a South East Queensland Housing Supply Expert Panel, which will go a long way towards filling the current gap in reliable data.
“While the model proposed by Government relies on internal processes to collect information, the appointment of an independent panel to oversee the program begins the process of depoliticizing the provision of housing in Queensland.
“The Property Council is keen to work with Government to ensure the independent board provides a balanced voice, representing a range of stakeholders involved in the industry.”
