The next World Expo in 2017 will be held in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan – and leaders are already preparing for the global event by unveiling 46 designs for the site master plan by firms from around the world.

The theme of the 2017 Expo is Future Energy, and the competing plans all revolve around the concepts of renewable energy, sustainability and the green economy.

The city and expo leaders are strongly focused on renewable energy and sustainability. The President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev said the theme of the exhibition was closely related to green economy “which takes into account the possibility of using alternative energy sources and the autonomous water and heat provision in each of the constructions”.

Competitors were asked to make sure their design fell under the theme of Future Energy and address key concepts including, renewable energy, electric transport, energy security, CO2 emissions reduction and energy efficiency.

An international competition was held this year and over 100 firms submitted proposals with 46 shortlisted. Now firms from over 20 countries, including local firms from Kazahkstan, are represented.

The organising committee will select a winning team this month. See all the entries here.
