14 November 2013 — The 2013 Australian Institute of Quantity Surveyors Infinite Value Awards winners have been announced, with the sustainable/green project award going to Monash University Briggs and Jackomos Hall.
The award aims to reward and recognise a project that has made significant impact in the environmental space and where the principals of sustainability have been at the forefront of the design and execution of the project.
The 5 Star Green Star Multi-Residential (Design and As Built) project offers fully self-contained environmentally sustainable accommodation for up to 600 students across two five-storey apartment buildings.
The halls “showcase the application of modern sustainable design principles on a significant scale, and in a relatively low-cost design and build project, delivered ahead of schedule and budget”, Monash University’s environmental sustainability manager Brett Walters previously said.
Stephen Ballesty, director and head of advisory with Rider Levett Bucknall, took out both the Lifetime Contribution Award and the major Lend Lease Professional of the Year Award.
“These awards are important in validating my work with the AIQS and other industry bodies, in particular my focus non-traditional services addressing whole of life and qualitative issues,” Mr Ballesty said.
“I have been fortunate in career and the people I have worked with over an extended time.
“I often tell the staff it is not a job, it is a lifestyle.”
The major Lend Lease Project of the Year award went to the Translational Research Institute, a comprehensive scientific research and biopharmaceutical facility located on the Princess Alexandra Hospital Campus in Brisbane.
The $195 million building comprises four floors of laboratory research plus facilities for research support, administration and teaching, and spans 32,000 square metre.
Associate director of Davis Langdon Gary McDonald, who collected the award, said its not only the attention to architectural detail and functionality of the project that made it stand out, but also what it means to the people that work there.
“It looks great and serves a valuable function to mankind, and everyone loves to work there,” he said. “The award is great recognition for the clients too.”
