James Hay

Network general manager motorways for NSW Roads and Maritime Services James Hay is trading overseeing Sydney’s controversial WestConnex project to head up the NZ Government’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority.

Mr Hay will take up the chief executive role from mid-January 2017, replacing current chief executive Mike Underhill who is retiring this month.

Mr Hay shifted from NZ to take up the position with RMS in October 2015, having held roles in his home country including acting chief executive for Meridian Energy, chair of Macarthur wind farm UJV, and as a director of Powershop, Whisper tech, Meridian Energy Australia, Marlborough Lines Limited and Cloud M Limited.

He has also held leadership roles with the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority, and was general counsel for Meridian Energy during its initial establishment.

EECA chair Tom Campbell said Mr Hay had “an impressive background spanning the energy, transport and public sectors, working with infrastructure and energy businesses, and with community-facing organisations”.

“This is an excellent fit for EECA, which is a government agency known for its expertise in working across all sectors of the economy.”
