Insurer backs national cyclone resilience standards for solar farms

IN BRIEF: Owners of solar farms in cyclone prone areas are being warned to ensure their assets can be protected. Commercial and industrial property insurer FM Global hit the news this week pushing for national regulations to ensure ground-mounted solar farms can withstand cyclones and high winds.

FM Global operations manager, Australia Lynette Schultheis said her company hoped the government and insurance industry will get on board to standardise the resilience testing of solar panels and “future-proof our country’s renewable energy investments.”

Cyclone-prone regions such as northern Queensland gets an average of 4.7 tropical cyclones a year.
