Townsville shopping centre to get massive car park solar array

BRIEF: Construction has started on the installation of a 4800 panel solar photovoltaic array above the car park of Dexus owned Willows Shopping Centre in Townsville, Queensland.

Upon completion, the installation is expected to produce around 2500 megawatts of power each year — the equivalent of 370 households worth of electricity usage. It will also provide additional shading for 500 parked cars, along with under-canopy lighting for an “improved shopper experience”.

Dexus claims it will become the largest carpark solar canopy in the country, overtaking a 240 car space installation at Westfield Marion in Adelaide, South Australia and a 4136 panel array atop a Flinders University car park, also in Adelaide.
