IN BRIEF: Sydney is Australia’s most sustainable city, according to the 2018 Sustainable Cities Index from Arcadis.

Sydney was ranked number 34 out of 100 global cities, followed by Canberra (35), Brisbane (44) and Melbourne (56).

London topped the global list as the world’s most sustainable city.

“With no Australian city cracking the top 30 and one in the bottom 50, it’s confirmation that we need to continue to focus on improving the long-term sustainability, resilience and performance of our cities to act on the global stage,” Arcadis Australian cities director Stephen Taylor said.

Global cities are ranked on three pillars of sustainability: “people, planet and profit”. These are closely aligned to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, according to the Arcadis report.
